Motta Architecture

The Dogon desk was designed as the evolution of the Himba table. The oval, sinuous shape of its oiled natural ash top rests on faceted legs positioned in a semi-circle.
The top is the result of the juxtaposition of two elements, separated by a groove that allows the passage of cables, thus keeping the desk free of entaglements.

The Himba storage unit, a black-stained solid ash box with built-in shelves, has closing doors composed of an ash frame and woven rope.
The weave is traditionally designed on a orthogonal frame, exept in its central part, where a lighter pattern of weaving made with a single thread makes the vertical direction of the warp visible.

This chair's design is based on bold marks and primitive volumes. The solid wood is shaped and then patiently brushed so that the grain can be felt to the touch. The legs are elegantly placed on the ground and the seat, a circle crafted with the stuffing technique, is designed with a simple and tight weave, composed of rope bands that horizontally overlap the main vertical order.

The table has a circular top in black-stained brushed ash, that can have a matt or glossy finish. It is composed of two semi-circles the form a central slit: the edge is rounded and curves inwards towards the center, highlighting the juxtaposition of these two parts. The leg is the result of a craftsmanship that has evolved over time with the support of contemporary manufacturing technology. It is composed of solid wood planks that create facets and an opening alongside the curve, concentric to the top. The parts are never joined but always separated by a line of shadow that lets one discern the simple shapes of which the final product is composed.

The design process starts with the study and research of the material. It is for this reason all the objects are born from the craftsmanship of raw solid wood planks, so as to start the construction of a new story.
The project stands out for its use of this primary material, letting it speak and taming its apparent rigour, only to reveal its versatility, giving each piece a unique character. The design is expressed through accentuated roundness, curves and rounded edges, that find balance in the relationship with angular shapes and interweaving of rigorous lines.
Straw-weaving, an ancient technique that follows the geometry of shapes with precise rules, is researched and used to create the seats and doors of the storage unit. The rope weaves and creates geometric compositions of timeless continuous lines. It has two shades: Havana, a warm natural tone, and Moka, warm black.
